As 2008 is the National Year of Reading, Melbourne Festival will have a literary thread running through it this year. The programme of events leading up to the Festival will include a Comedy Night, an Evening of Wine and Words on the theme “You are what you read!”, a poetry evening – featuring local poets and a talk by Roy Hattersley about his new book Borrowed Time – the story of Britain between the wars. Local writers are invited to participate in a Melbourne Festival Creative Writing Competition – sponsored by the Village Voice. In addition during the Art and Architecture Trail weekend Authors including Andy Cope and Gregory Heath will be speaking at Melbourne Library. The Little Goldfish, a children’s book written by Victoria Yates and Illustrated by Victoria Brown will be launched and local illustrators, bookmakers and printmakers will be highlighted on the Trail.
Poetry
Calling Melbourne’s poets! As part of the Arts Festival we are planning to hold another Poetry Evening in the elegant surroundings of The Grange, and this year we would like to encourage the budding poets of Melbourne to come and read their own works. Melbourne Festival Creative Writing Competition
New to Melbourne Festival in 2008 is a Creative Writing Competition, open to adults and teenagers, organised by the Melbourne Festival team in association with the Village Voice. Entries should be 10 to 250 words of prose or poetry on the theme “Life and Art”. The closing date for entries is August 24th 2008. Judging will be conducted by a panel and the winner will be announced at 2pm on Saturday 13th September at Melbourne Library. The winning entry will be published in the October edition of Village Voice.
All entries will be available to view in the Library at the Bill Shone Leisure Centre, High Street, Melbourne during the Festival Art and Architecture Trail weekend - 13th & 14th September.
Conditions of Entry
1. The Competition is open to all adults and teenagers, except the organisers of the Melbourne Festival and the management of the Village Voice.
2. Entries can be of any length between 10 and 250 words and can be of poetry, prose or any mixture of the two. Anything from haiku to epic! The theme ‘Life and Art’ is intended to be open to wide and free interpretation, although the winner is expected to explore the relationship of life and art in a particularly original, moving or witty way.
3. The winning entry will most imaginatively and originally evoke or involve the theme ‘Life and Art’.
4. The work should not be offensive and it should be suitable for public display.
5. The winning entry will be published in the October edition of the Village Voice. All entries will be on display at Melbourne Library during Melbourne Festival Trail Weekend.
6. Each person may submit only one entry.
7. Entries should be posted to: Creative Writing Competition, c/o Salvus Cottage,
58 Ashby Road, Melbourne, DERBY, DE73 8ES or emailed to info@melbournefestival.co.uk with the email’s subject heading “Creative Writing Competition”.
8. It is very important that the following are clearly readable at the top of the page or email – Melbourne Festival Creative Writing Competition 2008
Title of piece.
Entrant’s name, address and telephone number should be clearly written at bottom of piece.
9. The closing date for the receipt of entries is August 24th 2008.
10. Judging by a panel will take place before September 12th and winners will be announced at Melbourne Library on Saturday 13th September at 2pm.
N.B. The decision of the judges is final, and neither Melbourne Festival Committee nor the Village Voice can enter into any correspondence concerning the result.
